Paul O’Neill, 72nd Secretary of the U.S. Treasury and CEO of Alcoa from 1987 to 1999 was one of the keynote speakers at the National Safety Council Congress in Chicago. Thousands were in attendance and his impact was inspiring.
When was the last time you heard a CEO say, “the damn product isn’t worth it…it’s neither right nor necessary to put yourself at risk for the greater good of the company”? All leaders say that their most valuable asset is their people, but Mr. O’Neill created proof, with a clear message that “people should never be hurt at work at Alcoa”. In 1987 Alcoa already had an excellent safety record (1.86) and today it’s 0.082.
