Changing Lanes to Escape the Line of Fire

Woman checking rear view mirror

Everyone has a safety story, and telling yours is one of the key concepts behind SafeStart.

Stories about times when someone was injured or had a close call help remind us of just how important safety training is.

Here’s a story we recently heard about a woman and her family in Calgary who narrowly avoided a speeding van:

A week after her SafeStart class, she was driving her van with her husband and children and recalled the recommendation discussed in class to check your rear view mirror for “Line-of-Fire” when stopped at a red light, something she had not been in the habit of doing.

She checked and saw a cube van racing up behind her—and she had a feeling it was not going to stop. She changed lanes and it raced past her, in all likelihood avoiding a terrible tragedy.

This story comes from our Strad Energy case study. It and others like it demonstrate how important it is to be aware of hazardous energy and other dangers no matter where you are.
