It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s a Firefighter!

A firefighter with a superhero shadow

Firefighters are the first to admit they have a pretty amazing job. And although they’re often viewed as super heroes, behind their mask and super-human courage they’re everyday people doing a job. It’s a job that can deeply impact their life in a debilitating way if things go wrong, but they love it. They make a difference. But they’re also human and they can make mistakes just like the rest of us.

Becoming a firefighter requires an extensive (and I mean extensive) amount of training. From theoretical to hands-on rescue training, they master teamwork, driver training, emergency medical, workplace health and safety, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness and confined space training. And this list isn’t even close to comprehensive.  So while more training may seem unnecessary, human factors training like SafeStart is a great complement to their existing training.

David Wilkin, Fire Captain with Hartland Fire Department says, “I highly recommend SafeStart to any other fire organization that’s looking to boost their safety program. With us as in tune with safety as we are, this is a great alternate approach to personal safety along with fire department safety.”

Until firefighters hear the tones go off that signal there’s a fire, they don’t know when they’ll get a call let alone what kind of call they’re walking into. Being aware of the states they’re in, like rushing or fatigue, can prevent critical errors they experience on the job.
